Gifts of Stocks and Bonds

Donating appreciated securities, including stocks or bonds, is an easy and tax-effective way for you to make a gift to Union Rescue Mission.

Stock

We gladly accept gifts of appreciated stocks. Donating stock directly to URM can provide 50% more funds than simply selling your shares and contributing the proceeds. There's no better way to put the full value of your stock to work to provide safe shelter, nourishing meals, and Christ-centered programs to help end the cycle of homelessness.

It's easy to make a gift of stock:

  1. Ask your broker to perform an "electronic transfer" of the mutual fund or individual stock shares you wish to donate.
  2. Instruct your broker to transfer the shares to:
     UNION RESCUE MISSION
     Merrill Lynch
     Account # 7EU-04B81
     DTC 8862
  3. Contact Cindy Nichols at 213-673-4813 or [email protected] to let us know your gift is on the way. Be sure to provide your contact information, the date of transfer, the name of the stock, and how many shares you are donating. This notification is needed to track the transaction and provide a tax-deductible receipt for your gift.

Benefits of gifts of stocks and bonds

  • Avoid paying capital gains tax on the sale of appreciated stock

How to make a gift of stocks and bonds

  1. By electronic transfer—Please contact us for instructions on how you can transfer stock or bonds from your brokerage or investment account to Union Rescue Mission.
  2. By certified mail—If you hold securities in certificate form, you will need to mail two envelopes separately to complete your gift. In the first envelope, place the unsigned stock certificate(s). In the other envelope, include a signed stock power for each certificate. You may obtain this power from your broker or bank. Please remember to use certified mail.

More on gifts of stocks and bonds

There are special rules for valuing a gift of stock. The value of a charitable gift of stock is determined by taking the mean between the high and low stock price on the date of the gift. Mutual fund shares are valued using the closing price for the fund on the date of the gift.
